Sketching Stuff

  • Publisher: Charlie O'Shields
  • Total Episodes: 65

I’m Charlie O’Shields, and just three years ago, I started sketching and painting with watercolor and became so hooked that I created a little blog called Doodlewash. It’s since grown much larger over the years, featuring posts from hundreds of artists all over the world, and in many ways it’s your usual art blog. Until I show up and start sketching stuff and rambling on about life, creativity and other little things that come to mind. Most of which have more to do with life in general than art itself. Being a bit shy, I’ve never appeared on video like so many of my artist friends, so I thought I would start with audio and sharing, not my paintings, but the stories they inspired. Many filled with facts you didn’t even think you needed to know, others a bit autobiographical, and some just plain fun. Welcome to Sketching Stuff, a collection of stories sketched from life.

Core Topics in University Mathematics

  • Publisher: The University of Nottingham
  • Total Episodes: 40

This series of videos is aimed primarily at first-year undergraduate mathematics students. It covers some of the topics which students often find hard, but which are fundamental to success in university mathematics. One example of such a topic is curve sketching, which can reveal the qualitative behaviour of a function where perhaps the mathematical expression for the function is rather impenetrable. Proficiency with curve sketching comes with practice, and it is often hard to know where to begin. The videos in this series provide some useful tips. Another example of a core topic in university mathematics is the idea of proof. Rigorous proof allows us to establish the truth of mathematical statements. Videos in this series highlight two ways of proving mathematical statements: by induction and by contradiction. Further videos highlight the generalisation of a familiar pre-university mathematical concept (a vector) to a more abstract setting (vector spaces).
