History:
The first vacation rentals emerged as early as the 1930s with the advent of places such as Manzanita Beach Bungalows in Seaside, Oregon. The Great Depression of the 1930s led to a decline in hotels and the popularity of vacation rentals spiked.
In 1965, President Lyndon Johnson created the National Rent-a-Campground program, which continued the expansion of vacation rentals. Rentals were achievable for a mere $400 per year for 30 sites. This program resulted in the development of 16,000 seasonal, commercial, and private recreation sites. With this, many people put their personal residences for rent.
In today’s world most of the vacation rentals, more than 90 percent, are now owned by private individuals. However, from 1997 to 2007, there was a decline in the number of vacation rentals in the U.S. The economic crash and housing bust resulted in an increase in the number of vacant homes.
Types:
Resort: Vacation rentals that appeal to business travelers, families on summer vacation or groups of friends. They might include a swimming pool, kiddie play area, game room, fitness center and business room.
Condo Complexes: Condominium complexes that are professionally managed and have hotel-type amenities and services on site.
Apartment Complexes: Apartment complexes that provide a rental service with hotel-type amenities and services on site.
Vacation Homes: A vacation home is a property, usually a single family residence, that is provided for rental to tourists on a short term basis, generally for at least four days.
