How Pens Help you in Writing?
Though the development of a writing instrument seems to have its origins thousands of years ago, the most remarkable development seems to have taken place during the 20th Century. Scientific and technological developments mean the modern pen is far more complex than its ancestor – with acetylene, electrical motors and even light sources now being integrated into pens. Yet even at this incredibly advanced point, pens still act in a similar way to determine how lines are written. This explains how so many different types of pens are available – including fountain, gel, ballpoint, gel, ballpoint, rollerball, child, felt tip, chisel, flex, industrial, mechanical and electric.
A fountain pen uses a small amount of coiled air to turn the most common type of pen. Just over 5,000 years ago in the 8th Century, the Chinese were the first to develop writing by using reeds and ink from the Chinese quail. The reed was shaped into a needle point with the end shaved off. The ink used was a natural clay colored with a reddish tint. It created a visible and readable print only on paper. By the 16th Century, paper in Europe was created by refining the fibers of cotton and linen. It was in the 17th Century that paper in Europe developed as we know it to-day. It was replaced by quill pens and dip pens as the glass pens began to be patented. These in turn were replaced by gel pens and ballpoint pens in the 20th Century.
Ballpoint pens were first patented by German-American inventor, Egbert B. Duval, in 1891. The modern ballpoint pen is for writing on any dry, slick surface, be it paper, cardboard, plastic, glass, wood or metal. The pen uses a tip with a small hole in it that is filled with ink. An air pocket inside the body of the pen is then compressed and a negative pressure is created inside the barrel of the pen. This forces ink through the hole to form a fine jet that coats the paper or other surface. The principle is very simple and modern ballpoint pens usually last for between 3 and 5 years of use.
Rollerball pens work in a similar manner to the ballpoint pen, but for any non-slick surfaces. The ink is driven less forcefully through the ink cartridge and towards the rollerball. The ink mixes with the paper and the pen is given a slight positive bias during this process.
Gel pens work in a very different manner. Instead of ink that is forced into a pen, gel is used. This is a very thick paste that is squeezed out of a tube into a pen. The pen uses a pump to squeeze out the gel when writing. Some people find that the sensation of writing with a ballpoint pen, gel pen and rollerball pen are very similar. A common myth claims that gel pens are a good way to prevent ink running onto clothes or the bed.
When choosing a pen for work or general use, you need to consider both the performance and writing style. In general, the higher the line-feed rate, the more quickly a pen will dry. This will give you less interference as you write. You should also consider the line variety of a pen. A fine point pen will generally produce finer lines and a broader range of widths than a fountain pen. The ink reservoir should be at least 3-times the length of your average writing session. This will give you enough ink to write without the ink ‘bottling up’. A longer pen will allow for the first 3 to 5 seconds of writing where there is no ink in the reservoir but you may find the ink gets dry as it moves down the pen into the feed. Some people like to hold their pen under a tap to re-charge the ink. If you like to write on sports cards or cards then gel pens may be for you.
