Dr Hannah Fry is a lecturer in the Mathematics of Cities at UCL’s Centre for Advanced Spatial Analysis in London. Despite having a master’s degree in maths and theoretical physics and a PhD in applied mathematics, Hannah is not the kind of mathematician to have posters of prime numbers on her wall. The maths Hannah uses revolves around looking at the patterns in human behaviour – in the study of complex social systems. By looking at the world from a mathematical perspective Hannah examines how the decisions that we make every day build up to cause housing crises and stock market crashes, and exploits the power of mathematics to help design a better society – from healthcare and transport to policing and everything in between.

Nanoparticles for cancer applications are increasingly able to move, sense, and interact the body in a controlled fashion, an affordance that has led them to be called robots. The challenge is to discover how trillions of nanobots can work together to improve the detection and treatment of tumors. Towards this end, the field of swarm robotics offers tools and techniques for controlling large numbers of robots with limited capabilities. Our swarm strategies are designed in realistic simulators using bio-inspiration, machine learning and crowdsourcing (NanoDoc: http://nanodoc.org). Strategies are then translated to large swarms of robots or preliminary tissue-on-a-chip devices. Sabine Hauert is Lecturer at the University of Bristol where she designs swarm of nanobots for biomedical applications. Swarm strategies are either inspired from nature or are automatically designed in simulation using machine learning and crowdsourcing. (NanoDoc – http://nanodoc.org). Change Management is one of the most critical ITSM processes for any organization, but it’s worryingly easy to get it wrong! All too many organizations try to deploy or improve in this key area and struggle to gain adoption from those it’s designed to support. ITIL is a great starting point but where is a poor Change Manager to turn when confronted with these questions that aren’t covered in the books: “Do Incidents really require changes to resolve them?”; “How do I make sure a CAB does not turn into a technical torture chamber?”; “What happens when Change Management goes home in the evening?”; “How do I stop people abusing my emergency change process?”; and of course “Just what is a change anyway?!” Join Peter as he shares practical solutions and tips gathered in his almost 20 years’ experience working within ITSM across all industry sectors.
