SMS is a text messaging service component of most telephone, Internet, and mobile device systems. It uses standardized communication protocols to enable mobile devices to exchange short text messages. An intermediary service can facilitate a text-to-voice conversion to be sent to landlines.
SMS was originally defined as part of the Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) that was first introduced by the European Telecommunications Standards Institute in 1987. The acronym originally stood for “Short Message Service” in GSM version 1, but it was changed to “Short Message Service System” in 1993 when GSM was updated to GSM version 2. In 1997, the service was further enhanced in GSM version 3, in which the message size limit was raised to 160 bytes (about size of a typical SMS text message) to facilitate the delivery of facsimile and data.
